.hack//SIGN Episode 5

.hack//SIGN

"Captured"

Ugh, right after the horrible Engrish of the opening theme, we go right into another terribly Engrishy song.

The visual design of the show is really beginning to drain on me. Sometimes it looks cool, but then sometimes it just looks stupid. For example, I hate Subaru's wings. Whenever Tsukasa summons his guardian, I want to laugh at how absurd it looks. Seriously, how could they not come up with a better visual design than a huge balloon? Another example are swords in the show. They generally look weird, ranging from menacing and sleek to looking like a plastic toy.

While the music is very good, the show's reliance on it makes its utilization very unsubtle. The soundtrack cuts from track to track without much connection, which makes it sometimes feel like you're just listening to a CD, and it's going from track to track. There aren't many mellow background tunes, so it's all in your face.

Things actually happen in this episode plotwise, though, which is a refreshing change. The Crimson Knights have a plan for catching Tsukasa and his Guardian, and we get some action, even if a huge bubble shooting at armored knights isn't exactly visually compelling. We've finally gone from a very flat story to some buildup in this segment, so hopefully we'll get further development in the next episode.

I take it that you are a fan of ACTIONEY anime,

like Trigun. Bleh. *vomits* Anyways, I don't mind

the slowmoving plot, and the music never

drowned out the speech to me. Having seen only

the last half of the series, i can't say that

you are expecting too much, but I think this is

just getting the ball rolling. Did you notice

that Tsukasa makes a lot of indistinguishable

noises in the back of his throat? And about

Obsession and the mispronounciatioon, they are a

Japanese band I beleive. Engligh and Japanese

are very different, so if you are native to one

and learn the other, you will most likely be very

accented. Say "konichiwa, dozu yokushiku, neko-

jin" {meaning "hello, nice to meet you, cat-

person"} Yeah. If you were raised Japanese like

the people in See-Saw, you would have a funkey

accent too.

How many Episode are In .hack//sign ?

Posted by: Tom at June 18, 2004 07:07 AM

To start off, I agree with the first post completely, and to the second post, there are 26 episodes.
What You have to understand about the show is that you need the slow moving plot in order to explain everything that is being introduced. Would you rather have a ton of information thown in your face in one episode? The way it was done you can be able to conect to the show better as you're eased into it. Although most people do find the show boring for this reason, I personally love the whole .hack story.
Second, by "Engrishy" I suppose you're referring to pronunciation-In which case you have to remeber this is a Japanese band. In any case, the show doesn't rely on the music but uses it for effect and emphasis. I agree that the music is very good and there is background music- especially if you listen to the soundtrack.
Perhaps you just need to give this show more of a chance, you only reviewed 5 episodes- try to stick it out till the end. ~by the way, your "reviews" are less of actual reviews and more just your opinion- in which you have delicately picked as many flaws as possible ^_~
