.hack//SIGN Episode 2

.hack//SIGN

"Guardian"

I love Yuki Kajiura, but I swear the opening theme to .hack//SIGN has the stupidest lyrics I have ever seen. (It doesn't help that the lyrics are almost completely unintelligible, either.)

How come I must know where obsession needs to go?
How come I must know the direction of relieving?
How come I must know where the passion hides its feelings?

Deep in the night (far off the light)
Missing my headache
Visions of light (Sweeter delight)
Kissin' my loveache

Okay, for starters, "the direction of relieving"? Are you kidding me? Let's not even get into what the heck her "loveache" is. (What's the rating on this show, anyways?) Okay, maybe I shouldn't make a habit of criticizing the lyrics of anime intro songs, but you have to admit that these are pretty bad.

.hack//SIGN takes place almost completely in the World, an online game in the future. It seems like the people who came up with the plot and dialogue for .hack//SIGN have heard the concept of what one of these games is like, but don't really get it. Normally this wouldn't be a problem (how accurate is anime, anyways?), but the fact that the dialogue gets bogged down in these boring characters pontificating over the aspects of this game really kills the show. The fact that these characters that look like cool mages, swordsmen, or whatever, are actually normal people, is not really the most exciting idea. Do I really care that Mimiru just came back from taking a bath? Not really.

The show really hits a low point when they begin to discuss the ramifications of resetting a single-player RPG. Um... yeah. Oh, by the way, he played this game a long time ago, before we had games we could play together. By my watch, that means the early eighties.

Also deserving mention is the wonderful voice acting in this show. Usually, anime voice actors overact their parts (just a tad). Luckily, .hack//SIGN employs voice talent from the Matrix school, so it's all as deadpan as can be. Maybe the same excuse can be given, since they're all avatars in a computer game. This is actually a larger problem, because facial expressions are very toned down, and sometimes the sleepily-delivered lines can have more emotion than their characters show.

Other than that, the art is still pretty good, with the exception of Tsukasa, who seems to look weird from every angle he's drawn from. Maybe his first episode look was just the wrong one or something.

Here's a pronunciation question. The wonderfully Engrish pronunciation of "the" as "za". Now, as a native English speaker, when I form the "th" sound, my tongue is against the back of my teeth, while when I make the "za" sound, it's a bit farther back. How the heck can you get this wrong?

Maybe if the show wasn't so terrible, I could comment about more relevant things.

Rating: D

You fool,
The terms of the anime universe (both real and virtual) rely and are only loosly bound by the real worlds limits. Since its an anime, it can rewrite history as it pleases.
As for "discuss the ramifications of resetting a single-player RPG". They have to explain the PLOT, fool. If they didn't talk about it, it would ba taken as they weren't interested in it.
When Mimiru says shes taken a bath, its charactor development. Even if its unwanted or useless information, it 1: says where shes been and 2: it helps to built char development. (as does everything they do, movement, speech, expression etc)
How people pronouce things can be related to all sorts of things, including their native language, where they were brought up (because obvously, there are slight changes in language between countries and slight changes within cities and communities.) And as well as that, they may have changed their voice to suit the charactor their playing and that style of language.
Most animes (and some other media materials) go for catchy, rememberable and cheap music, it dosen't matter so much that the words arn't that great.
Its easy enough to pick holes in things, as nothing is perfect from everybodies perception (which is impossible if you didn't realise)
And besides that, what you thought of the anime, as well as how far you saw into it will be diffrent for everyone else who sees it, and therefore only a guidline with people of similar perception. Its alot harder to make something that is acceptable, or even deemed as good or great by the majority of the people that watch it.
By the way, i don't leave my e-mail address out on webpages because of spiders and e-mail collectors so don't expect to contact me there.
I also havn't left a url for you to reach me as i don't like your style. So if you actually read this and i doubt it will, you'll realise that you've just wasted your time (your going to dissmiss it the same way i dissmissed your review) and thats what you get for picking holes in something that is better then what you can make.

man, i love to critise.

I'll have to agree with you on this one. Though Bandai hypes .Hack/sign as there big ultimate project that combines anime, video games, and a bit of manga on the side it really isn't all that impressive.

Though on the issue of song lyrics, let's be honest here. ALL anime has at least some form of odd and perhaps awful lyrics to them. Mostly due to their fascination with English and the inability to use it in a correct way. Its expected, but it would be nice to get something more interesting for once. Or grammatically correct I suppose.

Tsukasa is a dimwit and should die. Oh wait, thats not a critique.

Somehow, I find .Hack/sign especially wrong, much like I don't like the Matrix. Why? Because it allows geeks with no lives to become something they are not but you know what? It is only a computerized projection that does not exist in the physical world. Hence it makes things quite stupid. Its like wondering if the girl characters in the "game" are just pervy old salary men or what not. Hey it IS an online game. It could happen.

Oh I got it, Tsukasa is really some guy that died or went into shock, but the neural VR system that the game uses is tapping his brain (which is still trucking along) and that is why he is stuck and is not quite sure whats going on. LOGIC!

Oh yeah...and I like to criticize...err "critise" as well. ;)

Damn you! The theme song is cool. And to get the whole point of the story, you have to listen to what they are saying. Sure, it's not the best (or funniest) anime ever, but it's still cool.

Also, Tsukasa must never ever ever ever die. HE (excuse me. "She") MUST LIVE!!!

One thing I love about this show is the music. It's so beautiful and I want the CD for my birthday. I agree with Sirex on his/her comments. I'm quite surprised Cartoon Network put it on their Saturday lineup thingy.

The dead one. Yes it could happen, like Tsukasa is a male in the world and a female outside of it?

They say certain stuff in it so they can build upon it later. I really like this anime and it doesn't get enough credit at all. It's a more serious one in some aspects and also humorus, but doesn't go over the line like most shows..

Why does everyone in reviews of this show say Tsukasa is a whiny, totally unlikeable character?!?! Look at it this way: How would YOU like it if YOU were caught in a computer game, having to question whether you had a place to return to, being totally and completely different from everyone else around you, and had to constantly ask yourself if you really exist or not? OK, so let's say being stuck in an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) has always been your dream. Well, how bout' not being able to fight because you would actually feel pain when you do? You'll find out later that this is true with Tsukasa. And you need to tell yourself "I'll find out the reason for this later on", or else... Well, look what happened here! And why is Tsukasa so afraid of everything? Everyone's after him, that's why! The Crimson Knights, for example,(F**k them!!!) and other players who might want revenge on him when he HAD to defend himself, although they'd have to be pretty stupid to dare face him again... And, y'know what? I'll spoil you--another reason we find out he is like that, is because, revealed in the flashbacks from the real world, he was abused by "his" father in the real world... It's disheartening, if you ask me... Anyone you know, even secretly, could be as lost and afraid as he is--not necessarily for the same reasons, but because of a lack of self-confidence and things like that. Oh, and what's wrong with finding out what YOU did after the 1st 5 minutes into a show? Were they supposed to start? The characters already knowing what the deal was with Tsukasa? That would be starting...3/16ths into a show!!! )Or some other fraction...) And maybe that was the plan! Y'know, getting people to care more about the music than the actual show so they can sell a whole bunch of soundtracks of it! BTW, I tape that show every weekend JUST FOR THE MUSIC, BECAUSE I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!! And lastly, you CAN review something well without being practically downright cold!!!

If you're going to review something, you should review it properly, instead of nit-picking at menial things like the lyrics of the intro sequence. What did you expect? We're lucky the words are even in English. :) I'm sure everyone who speaks English and has seen this said "WTF? Direction of relieving?!"

I'll agree, the musical score itself is wonderful, and it really does set the tone for most of the series.

You mentioned the "boring characters pontificating over the aspects of the game" really kills the show. If you've ever played an MMORPG, this pontification is actually pretty interesting.. it makes you think about the psychology and philosophy behind MMOs.

I, personally, found it fascinating that the cast of characters were actually characters _within_ characters. I'm not sure why it was uninteresting to you to hear about the real characters behind the players; I seemed to find myself wanting more whenever I'd see any "real world" footage. I guess I am kind of biased; I've been playing MMOs for over 6 years now. ;)

You said that the plot & dialog people on the team didn't really "get" MMORPGs. First, it's set in the year 2007. Have you played an MMO in the year 2007? Has anybody?!

Second, it's a story. _Fiction._ They didn't base this off of Everquest or Lineage or UO. It would have been much less interesting had they conformed to the norms of today's MMOs.

The only thing that upset me with .hack//SIGN was the many unanswered questions they left us to determine on our own. It would've been nice to get more background.

And about the pronounciation of "The World". In Spanish, when you pronounce a "v", it sounds like a "b". In Japanese, "R" is pronounced as "L". It's not all based on English, y'know. I'm really kind of surprised that you'd make such a silly assumption about "th". Did it ever occur to you that even though the letters look the same, that they are completely _different languages?_ I mean, come on!!!

At least, if you're going to post anime reviews, please pay attention to detail and character development and forget about the petty things.

hmmmm... any 1 know where do download the shows on ur comp... i always missed .hack//sign inbetween so i got lost alot.. and i wanna see them all in order with no commercial crap =D

Posted by: some guy at August 28, 2004 05:14 PM

listen you, stop insulting .hack//sign! it's a better anime then you'll every come up with. but i have to agree you shouldn't make a habit of critisizing the lyrics of the intro! just because you can't see the true meaning behind the anime, let alone the song, doesn't mean others can't. so put a sock in it!!!
